Experienced Growers

Ontario’s skilled, experienced seed corn growers are a resource that complement the region’s soils and its climate in explaining why Ontario has been so successful at attracting and maintaining seed corn production.

There are many benefits for companies working with the province’s 500 seed corn growers.

Many Ontario seed corn growers are second or even third generation. They understand how seed corn is produced. They know the terminology and they are equipped with specialized planters and other field equipment.

Ontario seed corn growers are experienced at working together with seed corn companies to meet yield and quality objectives.

We grow other crops, including IP soybeans, but when it comes to management, seed corn takes precedence.Seed corn gets our more productive soils and it also benefits from our proximity to the Great Lakes.

Greg Iler, Harrow
The Iler family grows 200 acres of seed corn, a tradition dating back almost 30 years. The Ilers are equipped for seed corn production, and arrange their rotations for optimum seed corn performance.

Isolation distances are facilitated by the wide variety of crops grown in the region and in many townships, neighbours plan their crop rotations together to ensure that seed corn isolation distances are met and exceeded. Ontario’s seed corn growers tend to be on the cutting edge of technology. Most growers are familiar with, and have utilized GPS systems. Growers must complete a provincial grower pesticide course to enhance their management expertise on weed and pest control inputs. Many growers have also participated in the provincial Environmental Farm Plan program, which has earned international recognition for its focus on ways for modern agriculture and the environment to co-exist.

There are benefits to seed corn companies as well due to the fact that seed corn is a significant economic focus for the region. Detasselling contractors, for instance, ensure that fields are detasselled expertly and on time.

Seed corn is a good fit for us as growers and it’s a good fit for the land as well. Soils in this area are vert productive.

John Lugtigheid, Kent Bridge
The Lugtighead family farm is a diversified livestock, field crop and vegetable operation that is organized around seed corn production. The Lugtigheids are equipped for seed corn and use manure from their livestock operation to maintain soil fertility, structure and moisture retention for their seed coen acreage.

Seed Corn Growers of Ontario

The Seed Corn Growers of Ontario play an important role in enhancing the knowledge of Ontario growers. They coordinate educational opportunities for growers, and ensure that all growers are in good standing. To produce seed corn in Ontario, a grower must establish a reputation for quality of work and attention to detail. Growers must have a record of quality crop production with a high level of production skill, the ability to take initiative and good communication skills.
